So I went to their little cottage. No running water at all here. Water was obtained from a tap in the courtyard. Four families got their water from this one tap.

Auntie cooked on an open range. There was a flush toilet but to get to it you had to cross the courtyard and go along the path at the side of the allotments which were tended by the local inhabitants.

Uncle Fred had one of these patches and very proud of it he was too. I lived here with Auntie Hilda ,Uncle Fred, their son Jack(about 6 at the time) and for a short time Peggy another evacuee from Birmingham.
